The Trump administration submitted its updated report on COVID-19 demographic data to Congress, as required by the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act.
Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) described the report as “incomplete,” noting it is “still missing race and ethnicity data for over half of COVID-19 case reports.” On pp. 9-10 of the report, the administration describes the actions being taken to improve completeness of race/ethnicity data in COVID-19 surveillance and laboratory reporting system. They include the new data reporting guidance for laboratory testing of COVID-19 (FAQs; WHG summary). HHS encourages states and local public health departments to implement the new reporting requirements “as soon as possible, but no later than August 1, 2020.” More complete race/ethnicity data for COVID-19 may not be available until later this summer.
