5303 - Training in General, Pediatric, and Public Health Dentistry

Implementation Status
Statutory Text

Summary

Re-designates a portion of the PHSA to include support and development of dental training programs.  Toward this end, authorizes the Secretary of HHS to make five-year grants – subject to annual approval and funding availability –  available to or enter into contracts with schools of dentistry, public or nonprofit private hospitals, or a public or private nonprofit entity deemed appropriate by the Secretary to, among other things, carry out these professional training and loan repayment programs.  Further delineates eligibility as well as award preference criteria (e.g., applicants with a track record of training individuals who are from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds, or from underrepresented minorities).  Authorizes to be appropriated (but does not delineate a separate Congressional appropriation) $30 million for FY 2010 and such sums as may be necessary for each of FYs 2011-2015.  Further delineates requirements relative to the ability of awarded entities to carryover funds from one year to another.

2014

2015

A Feb. 6, 2105 HRSA Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry (ACTPCMD) is scheduled to discuss health literacy and patient engagement for inclusion in the 12th ACTPCMD Report. The report will be submitted to the Secretary of HHS and the Senate HELP and House Energy and Commerce Committees.

On July 14, HRSA announced the award of roughly $94 million to support a number of programs, many of which buttressed by the ACA, to strengthen and expand the health care workforce.
